UNIT 2 LEXIS

The second unit was about lexis where I learnt that lexis is a set of possible words in a language which have an authentic meaning. There are different types of meanings which are denotative meaning, figurative meaning and the meaning according to the context. The meaning of some vocabulary items come from their form, prefixes, suffixes or compounds (Spratt, Pulverness & Williams, 2011).  There are also word that are connected with one another, for example in synonyms, antonyms, lexical sets and word family. However, it is difficult for students to understand and recognize false friends, homophones, homonyms and varieties of English because some of these words are not familiar with the language because they are pronounced in a different way and in different situations.  To sum up, in a teaching situation, I would apply different extension activities where students can practice and increase their vocabulary. Instead of thinking of vocabulary as  a specific unit of instruction, students need to realize and recognize that the terms they learn are relevant (Jordan, 2017). In addition, students will improve their four English skills and they will be able to communicate effectively.
